How much does insuring the Volkswagen Passat cost in your state?

A Volkswagen Passat is a large family car that has been in the American market since 1973. It is currently in its sixth generation, and enjoys considerable popularity in both the new and used car markets.

While buying a used Passat, you must also factor in the insurance costs. As of November 29, 2013, used car data for the years 2005-2012 shows us that on an average, the United States pays $1511 to insure the Passat on an annual basis.  In South Dakota, the Passat is available for a median price of $6,945, which is the lowest in the country. However, you have to pay an average annual insurance rate of $ 1,489 (i.e., 21% of the cost) here, which is higher than the insurance average in 25 other states.

The average annual insurance rate is the highest ($3082) in Georgia. The median price of the Passat is $15,998 here, which means that you spend 19% of your total costs on insurance. Maine, on the other hand, is the least expensive state to buy insurance for the Passat. The average annual insurance rate here is $830, and in Iowa it is $923. Maine and Iowa are the only two states where the average insurance is lower than $1,000.

In Ohio, Indiana and North Carolina, Passat drivers pay an amount ranging from $1000-$1100 to insure their cars. The insurance average is between $1100 and $1200 in Colorado, Illinois, South Carolina, Washington, and Wisconsin.

In Florida, New Hampshire, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, New York, and Mississippi, you will have to pay an amount between $1200 and $1300 to insure a Passat.

Of the three states in the tri-state area, insuring the Passat costs the least in New York. In New Jersey, you would have to pay an average annual insurance rate of $1667, and in Connecticut, you would pay $1953.

Louisiana, Michigan, and Georgia are the most expensive states to buy insurance for the Passat, with average annual insurance rates of $2347, $2777, and $3082, respectively. If you live in one of these states, you might want to try lowering your premiums by investing in an anti-theft device for your car. This might help marginally lower your overall costs.
